Parents' Times

My parents were in their twenties in the 1970s. At the time, Duvalier Jr. was the president. He succeeded his father, the Dictator, after his death. The general population felt that it was new liberation, the son president was more lenient than his father. Just like the Renaissance in the United State, a rebirth of culture occurred in Haiti. People were painting and enjoying their new freedom, travels increase and foreign presence was gradually increasing. More students had
the possibility to attend school and learn French. Even with all their
studies for their degrees, my parents made time for music. At the time,
there were many different categories. Slowly, but surely, folk music's
popularity was slowing down and local music was rising. It was the time of
romantic walks, long French poems, serenades for the ladies. But, bands
were improving the sounds of the local music and were coming up with new
sounds. A new category was created: compas. Compas became the major group
of the time. There were drums, guitars, various types of instruments.
